A paradigm shift then occurred in schools with regards to the way to approach driving sessions -- the concept of defensive driving. This type of road driving is viewed as more adaptive compared to prevailing methods; it aimed to 'save lives, time, and cash despite the conditions all around the driver, and regardless of the action of other drivers on the road.' However, while lauding the progressive facets of the idea, its targeted learning audience was seen as too broad, and not focused enough for the particular concerns of teenybopper learners.

Recently, driver education was leaving the domain of public schools. More and more new drivers are getting driving lessons from private schools of motoring. The normal driving school, which is operated like a business, is primarily centered on helping teens get their driving license, and less on teaching driving techniques beyond the minimum proficiency necessary for permission. Issues for example car control, proper control over distractions when driving, attitude, and other associated concerns are rarely covered within this 'license-focused' teaching method.
